New Daily Persistent Headache (NDPH)

New Daily Persistent Headache (NDPH)

New daily persistent headache (NDPH) is a diagnosis often given to people with no history of headache or migraine who experience sudden onset, persistent, and debilitating headaches, often accompanied by extreme light- and sound-sensitivity, nausea, and loss of concentration. These symptoms may be accompanied by a tender scalp, stiffness and pain in the shoulders and neck, and reluctance to move in case this triggers more pain.

Medical treatment for NDPH involves drugs intended to interrupt the pain signals to the brain or to mask the symptoms. Such drug treatments can result in side-effects such as memory loss and “brain fog”, with any beneficial effects wearing off as the body becomes accustomed to the drug.

Myofascial Release for NDPH

Myofascial release and advanced massage therapy for NDPH takes a different approach, which is based around an understanding of the body as a system of connective and connected tissue in which stress and physical tension in one area can be transferred to another. Problems that have been quietly developing for years may reach a tipping point triggered by a particular life event or challenge to the immune system, such as a virus. Myofascial treatment for NDPH will often start at the obvious areas of head and neck and may also include working to release restrictions in the back, hips, legs, and pelvis. After such treatment clients have reported, often with relief and amazement, an almost immediate reduction in intensity of symptoms and complete elimination over time.
